I am encased in clouds of January
shadowed in doom-scroll grey
watching snow blow sideways
insight feels like a curse
a storm cares less about gravity
truth, tossed like slush
against my windows
logic, swirling in the cold front
ice knocks on doors…and souls
but finches brave the blitz
innocent as freshly fallen flakes
wise to the red tail hawk
I pray for kindling of the sun
to melt masks of this wintertide
uncover lies like dirty footprints
justice flowing like a freestone river

How the imagery resonates, Mish! The mingling in simile and metaphor of the storm of masks, lies, irrationality of the times and the snowstorm “against my windows” encapsulates the persona’s state of mind. I love how each of the similes bring to a head the hope in the last stanza, reflecting a much-needed thaw. Beautifully done.
Thank you so much, Dora.
Mish, I feel the floundering in your poem. I pray with you in your last stanza.
Your poem gave me the chills, Mish. We too are ‘encased in clouds of January’ and ‘shadowed in doom-scroll grey’ but thankfully we have no snow. I dread ice knocking on my door but have already seen those brave little finches bringing hope and spring.
Mish your verse is chilling – I am with you in the last stanza where you use fabulous smilies 💞
Lies like dirty footprints … what’s hidden in snow will get exposed…
sorry you’re encased like that. But this will pass before you know it, Mish. Your similes resonate. I hope all lies rise and that the liars are made accountable at last and for all. Thanks for sharing. Please be safe.
“doom scroll grey” and “…insight feels like a curse..” add to the heaviness of the winter snow. Nicely written 👏
Such wonderful imagery and metaphor, Mish. We’ve all been encased in the clouds of January. January lasted a year, and I feel this shortest month will do the same. Truth in the slush, logic in the wind–I, too, hope ice will melt and be gone.
Gorgeous poem, Mish!

Very well written, Mish. I love your last verse and the kindling of the sun!
